Default Viacom given access to youtube user data

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7488009.stm

They can go to hell. What kind of moronic waste of flesh gave that judge power, is all I can say?

This doesn't affect me much...I pretty much youtube to watch vlogs and movie trailers (which are mostly released by the movie companies anyway...) but I'm pretty pissed off that this is even allowed to happen...don't know about you guys.

Actually reading the article helps. The information won't be used for identifying individuals, only for proving their case against youtube.

it does contain info that can identify the individual

"The viewing log, which will be handed to Viacom, contains the log-in ID of users, the computer IP address (online identifier) and video clip details."

I do not think they actually want to sue google, They are after the data, I am thinking some sneaky move to get their hands on the users pattern of watching online streaming video data so that they may in later days able to do precise target audience advertisement. Imagine what 12 terabytes of data would be able to let you analyzed your consumer base. how much more sale that would bring them.

from another source
"While the data will only be available to Viacom and will not include users’ real names or e-mail addresses, it will include the log-ins and IP computer addresses for YouTube users."

IP addresses can pin point your location, its far better than any emails address, "real name" and "addresses."

very sneaky I say.

and need I say more:
"Viacom said it wanted the data to "compare the attractiveness of allegedly infringing video with that of non-infringing videos."

Down with Viacom!

Someone needs to overturn that decision. What gives Viacom the right to know what videos you watched? If there were any copyright violations they can send YouTube a DMCA takedown notice for that video, that's what that law was made for.

Though Google said giving the plaintiffs access to YouTube viewer data would threaten users' privacy, Stanton referred to Google's own blog entry in which the company argued that the IP address alone cannot identify a specific individual.
Google doesn't think so.

From the same source.

Viacom said it isn't seeking any user's identity. The company said any data provided "will be used exclusively for the purpose of proving our case against YouTube and Google (and) will be handled subject to a court protective order and in a highly confidential manner."
So yeah, I wouldn't worry about Viacom hunting you down for watching something of theirs.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying this is good. I'm just saying there's no reason to get worried that Viacom is going to start hunting down everyone that watched something of their on youtube.

lol, actually, i signed up to you tube last month cos i want to rate ctb's video and have watched

paul pott singing nessum norma
ctb's very nice short reel cos he given a link
otter's holding hands cos the're cute.
oh, and this guy that likes to blend things in a blender, specifically the one where he blended Chuck Noris ...

yeah, I wouldn't worry they come after me, I am more concern that they are trying to exploit a database that does not belong to them to exploit. which Viacom admits to wanting it for that purpose.

If we/one/people do not say something when the problem is just the tip of an iceberg, when the whole thing surface, it will be too late.

Ahhh... but their reason for 'needing' viewers names and IP addies, which is to compare how much plagiarized material is viewed against material that is not plagiarized, is still pure and simple bullshit. They DO NOT need viewers names and IP addies to get that information.

In the first place... to even go to these lengths... to go after videos on YouTube... Viacom looks like one big paranoid schizophrenic family. And in the second place, they proved themselves to be one big hypocritical paranoid schizophrenic family when they exposed themselves as copyright infringers for copying videos themselves off YouTube... ffs!
"North Carolina filmmaker Christopher Knight created a commercial as part of a campaign for a seat on a local school board last fall, and posted it on YouTube. Viacom's VH1 cable channel featured the clip — without Knight's permission — on its "Web Junk 2.0" TV series. Knight then posted the VH1 clip on Google's YouTube, only to have Viacom's lawyers demand the video's removal. Let's get this straight: Viacom is asserting that Knight is infringing its copyright by posting a video in which Viacom allegedly infringed on his copyright." http://valleywag.com/tech/copyfight/...ght-294863.php
Viacom's is a bogus bogus bogus request, and I don't know how Louis J. Stanton, USDJ, the judge who granted it and plunged the US into the dark ages, can ever show his face in public again.

They claimed that things stolen off them have over 82 million views; more than anything user-made on the site.

I'm sorry but this is bull CRAP. One of the people I'm subscribed to ALONE has over 7 million views, and he's quite low down on the most-viewed. Another of my subscriptions has well over 15 million views, after his videos got featured a few times.

Why doesn't Viacom just do a few searches on things they've believe have been stolen? That'll turn up infringed materials.

Viacom was split up in 2007 after Redstone former President of Viacom split it up as to why you now see CBS/Paramount.CBS tells Paramount what to do and Blockbusters I am not sure about it went its own way as well.No more Viacom it is history as of 2007.We over at Star Trek Gamers reported this back in Jan. 07 and my head Admin knew about in July 06.

You should be fined for watching Soulja Boy

I miss the days when nobody cared about copyright infringement on the internet. Made life so much easier!
